Two big traffic-related issues are unfolding at Austin City Hall.

The Texas Department of Transportation, along with the City of Austin, Travis County, and the Regional Mobility Authority have just announced plans for big intersection improvements on U.S. 290 through Oak Hill.

The project announced will re-configure U.S. Highway 290 from Joe Tanner Road to FM 1826, and help relieve traffic in the problematic "Y" in Oak Hill.

County Commissioner Karen Huber says the project will help, but there is a long way to go before traffic problems are completely solved.

"I'd like to look at this as the overture to a long opera, and the opera hasn't even been completely written," Huber said. "I'm mindful that as we launch into this, that we keep in mind the end result."

Every day 49,000 vehicles pass through Oak Hill. Officials say the new plan could cut commute times for drivers by 50 percent.
