January 2011 is Mentoring Month in Travis County

This week in court the Commissioners approved a proclamation recognizing the month of January 2011 as "Mentoring Month" in Travis County.

The teachers and staff in the Austin Independent School District, the Pflugerville Independent School District, the Del Valle Independent School District, and the Eanes Independent School District, welcome the assistance of community volunteers.
The existence of community volunteers working in schools has improved the attendance of the students, their performance in their studies, and the general education atmosphere of the schools.
Austin Partners in Education and the Seedling Foundation have developed programs to assist in the placement of community volunteers in the elementary middle, and high schools located in Travis County.
The education of the children of Travis County, is one of the most important needs in the county because it will prepare them to be the future leaders, scientists, doctors, scholars, and citizens of this county, this state, and this nation.

Internship Opportunity with Travis County Natural Resources and Environmental Quality Division

Seeking Applicants for: Mickey Leland Internship for work on Travis County's Balcones Canyonlands Preserve Land

The Travis County Natural Resources and Environmental Quality Division is seeking one intern to work on the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve land in Western Travis County in Spring/Summer 2011. Intern responsibilities will include monitoring surveys for endangered species (avian, cave invertebrates, and salamanders), and assisting with various aspects of Preserve management such as cowbird trapping, fire ant eradication, removal of non-native plants, land stewardship tasks, GIS and GPS work, species survey data management, and office work to support Preserve management.
