October 30--The opening of the new Hudson Bend fire station was very satisfying, because the added protection that it brings is needed so much, as the summer wildfires testified. Participating in the dedication were,(l-r) Karen; Barker Keith, President ESD 6; Chief Jim Linardos, Lake Travis Fire Rescue; ESD 6 Commissioners Paula Barr, Jerry Stein and Steve Albert.

November 30, 2010-- Travis County Commissioners Court passed a proclamation honoring Jonestown on its 25th anniversary as an incorporated city. L - R: Judge Sam Biscoe, Jonestown City Administrator Dan Dodson, Commissioner Karen Huber, Jonestown Mayor Deane Armstrong, Commissioner Sarah Eckhardt, Commissioner Ron Davis
September 12 - I had the privilege of attending the Lake Travis Underwater Cleanup sponsored by Keep Austin Beautiful. I was able to meet and personally thank all the wonderful volunteers who work so hard to keep our local treasure - Lake Travis - in pristine condition. What an honor!

Recent celebration for the "closing" on the building at 700 Lavaca -- the building recently purchased by the County for the new "County Seat" and County administrative offices.
Front: L to R: Cyd Grimes (Purchasing Agent & Dept. Director), Judge Sam Biscoe, Commissioner Karen Huber
Back Row, L to R: Roger El-Khourey (Director of Facilities Management Department), Rodney Rhoades (Executive Manager of Planning and Budget Operations), Susan Spartaro (County Auditor), and Keith Zimmerman (Broker consultant to the Commissioners Court)

The word on the street from the private sector is that the County did a really good deal on this -- it's the right building; it's an excellent quality building; it's in a perfect location; the price for it was just right -- not too high -- and is much, much less that what it would have cost if the County had to build a new building. So it would appear that our County team made a good deal. It's been a lot of work for the past 6 months and the credit goes to the project's Core Team and their staff.

June 2010 - My Constituent Relations Director, Lori Duarte, along with TCSO Captain, Frank Lofton, Travis County District Park Manager, Dan Perry, and Transportation and Natural Resources Senior Engineer, David Greear review plans for the July 10 Lake Travis Aquapalooza event, while attending a safety coordinating meeting held by state, county, and municipal law enforcement and emergency services agencies.

May 2010 - Members from the Manchaca community came together to clean up the Mancahca Fire Hall and grounds.
March 2010 -- KVET's Bob Cole and Manchaca resident, facilitated a public meeting of over 60 residents to discuss their future vision for the Manchaca Fire Hall Kitchen and Community Center. (I was there and took this photo.) At this meeting a Task Force was created -- to be headed by Slaughter Creek Reporter publisher, Ken Vargas -- to do a survey and come up with recommendations to the County on what the community would like to see happen with the property.

January 19, 2010 - Health and Humans Services Executive Manager Sherri Fleming facilitates the Animal Control meeting that I organized to launch the efforts to improve animal control in the areas of the County outside the Austin city limits. Over 40 individuals attended, representing every municipality in the County as well as County officials and law enforcement officers. Sheriff Greg Hamilton and I made opening remarks.

January 17, 2010 - Here I am getting ready to ride in the Victory parade for the Lake Travis Cavaliers at the Hill Country Galleria. The Cavs won the State 4A Football championship for the 3rd year in a row!! Go Cavs!

--2009--

From the swearing-in of a brand new Precinct 3 County Commissioner to kick things off, 2009 was a year full of interesting events and accomplishments, along with plenty of opportunities to meet civic-minded people from communities throughout Western Travis County. It was a pleasure, as is apparent in this sampler of photos.

January 4, 2009: Swearing-in at Star Ranch in front of a big crowd of enthusiastic supporters.Judge Orlinda Naranjo administered the oath of office and then we got down to celebrating the victory we all worked so hard to achieve.

April 15, 2009: Even though I was unable to attend the dedication of the restored Nameless School on April 25 (Chief of Staff Garry Brown covered for me), I did get to see the amazing finished product in a sneak-peak a week and a half in advance.
May 16, 2009: Dedication of McCombs’Austin Sunshine Camp at Lake Travis with Red McCombs and members of the Young Men’s Business League of Austin.
August 13, 2009: I was very pleased to get the opportunity to participate in the Barton Springs cleanup event, and not just because it was badly needed...that water felt great in the Austin summertime! In the picture on the right, Austin Councilwoman Laura Morrison and I get down to the nitty-gritty.
August 15, 2009: At the Travis County 4-H Achievement Banquet at the Regents School, the kids prepared some special artwork for the attendees.
September 13, 2009: I spoke to an overflow crowd of hard-working volunteers at the Lake Travis Underwater Cleanup. Most of the clean-up was above water because of the drought!!
October 5-7, 2009: I attended the County Judges & Commissioners Conference in Corpus Christi in order to compare notes with other county officials from across the State.
October 28, 2009: I joined Sheriff Greg Hamilton for the grand opening of Travis County Correctional Complex, Building 12. Throughout the year, I was similarly privileged to attend many other dedication ceremonies and fundraising events for community endeavors.

November 25, 2009: Along with Jonestown Mayor Deane Armstrong (on the left in the picture at left above), I volunteered to help serve Thanksgiving dinner at the Northwest Rural Community Center. In the picture with us is caseworker Janice Auld. It was great being with this group of seniors to see them all enjoying each others' company at this wonderful facility on this special occasion.
