Lake Travis floating condos voted down

A proposed floating development on Lake Travis may be sunk before work could set sail. A resolution passed Monday prohibiting the construction of floating homes on Lake Travis. The commissioners responsible for the decision heard from close to 40 area citizens who spoke against the proposed development. Among the concerns were that a fire would be difficult to control on the lake and could possibly spread to surrounding canyons. Safety and water quality in the event of a flash flood also were issues raised during the meeting. Officials with the Lower Colorado River Authority report the lake’s water level could rise up to 50-feet in a 24-hour period if conditions permitted. Commissioners also asked the LCRA to consider banning these types of structures for all highland lakes. "The challenge of dealing with floatable habitable structures on all of the highland lakes is a precedent that I think it would be irresponsible to go there at this point, given all the potential problems that we know could happen," Travis County Commissioner Karen Huber said. No property developers were present at the proceeding.
