Commissioner Karen Huber

A 6th generation Texan, Karen Huber, Travis County’s newest Commissioner, brings  over 20 years of professional experience in economic development, real estate development, business management and electric and water utilities management consulting.. She graduated with a B.A. in Government aflagsnd History from U.T., Austin and an M.A. in Political Science and International Business from the University of North Texas.  She has lived in Precinct 3 since 1995.

Karen has been an advocate
for her Western Travis County community for more than a dozen years. As an environmental conservationist, Karen has won numerous battles to preserve the health and beauty of the Texas countryside. With Scenic Texas, she organized citizen campaigns and testified before the Texas Legislature. The results were legislation to protect specific rural highways from new billboard construction and to beef up enforcement against “bandit signs” in public right-of-ways. Karen also helped lead both the Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve and the Nature Conservancy of Texas in increasing community education and awareness for their diverse environmental projects. In conjunction with Travis County and LCRA, Karen helped create and guide the Southwest Travis County Growth Dialog Panel that pushed for a balanced, comprehensive plan for growth, and resulted in the enactment of basic water quality protection rules and a Conservation subdivision plan.

flagsAs the County Commissioner for Precinct 3, Karen sits on numerous boards and committees.  They include the Austin-San Antonio Commuter Rail District, Austin-San Antonio Growth Corridor, EMS Subcommittee, Balcones Canyonlands Preserve Coordinating Committee, CAMPO, and CAPCOG to name just a few.  Furthermore, Karen is working with state legislators to obtain more land-use authority for counties that would help protect our quality of life and long-term economic vitality.  She strives to address the real problems that our community faces every day, and to build a responsible plan for growth that ensures that Travis County remains a great place to live and work.

Karen is married to Leonard Huber, a retired banker and, now, community volunteer, and they live in western Travis County
